The Truth and Lies about the Carrasco Family - Part II

Alas, its been a while.  Rainy Vancouver keeps me indoors - too wet to work on my marathon training!!!

So here goes with Part II of the yarns (btw, a very popular Goan term - "kinda cool" Russell Peters would say) - and goes nicely with the many other weird konkani idioms.  If I haven't already noted, I am writing this totally from my perspective - so I do not need any lip from anyone, especially some anonymous outspace being. (And to avoid BS, I will only be speaking about my own siblings - its so much easier to take it from them - I love them all, just like I care so much for my nephews and nieces!)  My notes represent my experience and my understanding of things - hence the title "Truth and Lies...."! --- its supposed to be funny/lighthearted if you didn't get it?

Well so what about the Carrasco Family?  Blah!  Yes that's actually true.  Well have you heard of anything significant that we have done? Sports stars ? Genuses? Musician extraodinaire? -ummmmm, pretty ho-hum.

But I have a couple of interesting stories - about U. Clifton - did you know that he stood tops in the whole of Uganda in his grade 7 exams?  And did you know that he won  a bicycle and cash for coming up with a winning slogan for a Coca-Cola competition?  he promptly sold the bike and with the all the cash bought his first drum set - he was about 15 years then.  But here is the kicker to the story.  The headmistress - and I really hope she is not just rolling in her grave but spinning out of control - a woman by the name of Mrs Castellino, a mangalorian (from Mangalore - never heard of this place, well check out the map for godsake (oops Goan balsphemy!)- you don't expect me to give you a geography and cultural lesson too!!), took it upon herself to favour a fellow mangi (pronounced mang-ghee and short for mangalorian!).  I think this fellow mangi could have been her nephew (I don't know). This kind of crap was common, especially if you came from a lower income family, which explains my contempt for folks like these!  I guess this woman thought she could get away with it, but thanks to Papa, who was not going to let it happen, who promptly appealed to the Ministry of Education and fought for the decision to be reversed and U. Clifton was recognized - how sweet!  I had not known about this until his very good friend, Ralph Cordeiro, told me about the story at the time of U. Clifton death, and Mai later confirmed it.  This same woman denied U. Clifton being promoted to a higher grade because he was away in India for a period of time that exceeded some number, and despite passing his exams in flying colours.  This woman was a dictator of sorts - and there were quite a few of them in our primary school!  You only have to hear the horror stories!

U. Clifton, was naturally smart - he never ever boasted about his achievements.  He hardly studied much - preferring to play the drums for hours on end. He went on to excel at high school and scored very high in the country and then Mai, paid for his education in the UK, where he completed he completed his Master's in Industrial Engineering.  While there, his class mate was a personal friend of Indira Ghandi and offer U.Clifton to go to India.... yes Neil and Colin - your names would have Paramjeet and Inderjeet and maybe a turban would cover your bald head, Neil,, complete with a nice indian accent and bangra dance lessons!

Then there was a time when U. Clifton snuck out to a local Lake in Kampala - a few miles away from home.  He was in his early teens.  But to do something like this you needed permission from your parents - just in case you fell into the lake and drowned!  Well he made the mistake of telling a rat about his adventures, and of course the rat ratted on him.  Next thing you know is U. Clifton got the appropriate punishment - a relatively mild case of the belt (the private punishment) and an hour of kneeling on the rough sidewalk/pavement outside the front door (public embarrassment).

(BTW - some of you cousins may not be aware that there you also have a several bright stars amongst you - in particular one who lives in Ottawa who won the Gold Medal in the Province of Ontario in his high school year!!!!)  This intelligence thing is pretty random, so you never know when you may light up - there is still hope!

CYA next time for The Truth and Lies..... - Part III

The Shout Out !!!

Bonjour Cousins

As the month of January quickly comes to an end, Feb 15th is approaching just as fast.

We have had some positive responses (via email and phone calls), so that’s encouraging ….and excited to build on those numbers very shortly

Its hard to imagine that we can all come together in one place…but this will be a great start for the years to come.

It’s also nice to know that some are considering bringing their little ones and we will definitely make sure we can cater for all of us to have a great time together.

We will start to make plans about the dates / events  for the Reunion in mid to late Feb..to give some more time for any adjustments

This year I will be having my own family reunion with my family in Sydney..in May / June…It will be the first time I will see my little nephew Xavier …can not wait!!! and I also wanted to share with you all that Neil, Katie and Xavier are coming to the Carrasco Reunion!

Also another exciting event this year will be the birth of Sheldon and Joanna new born this March..we pray for them and await the happy news soon…The Carrasco family just keeps growing J

I also extend an invite to anyone who wants to visit Montreal  …Im sure if our Aunts and Uncles could all live in a small hut in Uganda…we can squeeze into my 1 bdr rental downtown.. LOL

Take care and hope to hear from you all

From Boston Airport …. (u) Mitu reporting

Boston is a great city – the architecture is probably not as grand as in Chicago, but it sends a message of sorts!  The intellectual capital and a high life for the rich for sure.  Am so glad that Andrea came out here to study and hope some of you will do the same some day.  Was in DC earlier, had some hugely successful discussions and riding high on ether!

Anyway on to the CCR2011.  One thing that blows my mind is when I see a family that defines the ultimate in bonding, and what makes me so proud is that it lies within our extended family circles.  No definitely not the Carrasco Family but the Coutinho family!  To see a family so united and the love for each other is totally amazing and for that I am grateful to even be allowed to observe and to be a part of their circle, through my beloved bro! There are many reasons for this wonderful family spirit, but the central and most important one is due to Lucy.

In comparison our family sucks badly. Hence I would not even attempt to bring them together instead  bypassing them and giving you all a chance to reinforce extended family bonds.  To get this CCR2011 off the ground, it will take considerable change in attitude.  Amongst the cousins there is already a generation gap.  All need to leave the undercurrents of what has been our past behind and know that we are connected no matter what.  Your grand parents were not the cause of the disfunctionalities in this family, and lets not hide the fact that pockets of this exist!  I for one, as the runt of the family, have watched with bewilderment and the distances just do not make it easy to resolve the situations.  Instead I wish to salvage the rest – but it’s up to each and every one of you to make it work and rebuild a family connection – one that we definitely had back in Uganda, when I was just a toddler!

And so, while I know the younger members are ecstatic in getting together, I have not heard too much from the older siblings, except for Sybil and Sylvanoare both working on being there – assuming others are keeping C & K informed.  I know that it may mean sacrifice for some.  But if you are going to come, make it with a spirit of building family bonds, otherwise don’t bother – I do not mince words!

Signing off from Boston…. On my way to Beautiful BC, God's country!
